Women's volleyball upsets Azusa Pacific in Senior Day victory

Dominican honored its three seniors before Saturday's 3-1 victory over Azusa Pacific.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — After the Dominican University of California women's volleyball team was swept in late September, Dominican senior Hannah Stocking-Siagrkis looked at the schedule and saw the next time the two teams met — Senior Day along with teammates Jessica Jones and Kelsey Lardner. Instead, the Penguins played their best volleyball of the season in a 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 25-12) upset of the Cougars.

"We were hopeful that we could get one set against them tonight," said Stocking-Siagrkis, who had seven kills and 14 digs, giving her 821, the most career digs by a Dominican player in the Division II era. "To win tonight and finish our careers like this is unbelievable."

The Cougars' (21-9/13-7) entered having won eight of their last 10 matches and saw their four-match win streak snapped by the Penguins (12-18/9-11), who finished with their best season ever in the Division II era.

"We really came together and probably played the best we have all season," echoed Lardner, who dished out a career-high 59 assists in her final outing and finishes as the Penguins' assists leading in the Division II era with 1729. "I'm really proud of this group of girls."

"Being able to win here at home in our final game is an incredible feeling," said Jones, who finished with 14 kills and her career with 791, the most by a Dominican player in the Division II era.

The Penguins were led by sophomore Amanda Wasko, whose 22 kills and 19 assists gave her eight double-doubles on the season. Megan Callen added 11 kills and Samantha Rains had seven. Freshman libero Amanda Lee had 29 digs and Lardner added 11 digs for a double-double.

Down 6-4 in set one, the Penguins went on an 8-1 run that forced Azusa Pacific to call timeout. The Cougars pulled within a point but Dominican closed out the set on a 7-2 run that included a pair of kills each from Callen and Jones.

The Cougars built a 10-2 lead in set two and pulled to as few as four but ran out of time to catch up.

No team led more than two points in set four. Down three, 23-22, the Penguins took advantage of two Azusa Pacific attack errors to take the lead back and Stocking-Siagrkis slammed one home to put Dominican up 2-1 in the match.

Four consecutive kills coupled with a pair of Azusa Pacific attack errors put the Penguins up big early and another four consecutive kills extended the lead to 14-5. Strong service from Lardner and attack errors by the Cougars saw the lead balloon to 22-7 and the Conlan Center crowd rose to its feet in anticipation. Azusa Pacific threatened, pulling within 12, but a block by Lardner and Rains stopped the Cougars and sent Dominican home with a win to end the 2013 campaign.

"After tonight, I think I should make every home match Senior Day. You couldn't have asked for better play from all of my seniors," said Head Coach Gayle Stammer. "The entire team played their best for the seniors. It's one of these moments you look back and savor. I'm just so happy that they went to a new level, which is really exciting to see them accomplish."
