Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team used a well-rounded approach to top Chaminade University 3-1 (25-16, 25-20, 20-25, 25-19) in Pacific West Conference play on Monday night at the Conlan Center.
The Penguins (3-14/2-7) got 13 kills from Hannah Stocking-Siagrkis, 12 kills from
Jessica Jones, and nine from
Megan Callen. That wouldn't have been possible without setter Kelsey Gardner dishing out 41 assists in the match. Defensively, the Penguins were strong, with three players who recorded 10 or more digs —
Amanda Wasko had 19,
Kelsey Lardner had 16, and
Madeline Powelson had 11. Dominican also had strong service, scattering four aces throughout the contest.
While the Silver Swords had more kills (55-46) the more glaring difference came at the net, where Dominican combined for 11 blocks — seven of which involved
Samantha Rains — to just four by Chaminade.
"We've been working on gametime, do-or-die type situations in practice and it's really been paying off," said Head Coach
Gayle Stammer. "We had some tough matchups this week with the Hawai'i teams coming in town and being able to take two out of three is huge for us."
Dominican jumped on Chaminade (4-8/1-6) early, streaking to a 4-0, then a 10-4 lead in set one. The Penguins led the entire set en route to a 25-16 win. A 14-7 lead gave the Penguins enough cushion to stave off a 6-2 run by the Silver Swords. Chaminade didn't pull closer than four and a
Samantha Rains kill sent Dominican into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.
Chaminade looked reenergized though after the intermission and the Penguins found themselves trailing early, 5-1. Dominican went on a 5-1 run to cut a nine-point Silver Sword lead to 19-15 but the two teams exchanged points until Chaminade came out on top 25-20 in set three.
The two teams continued to trade points early in set four. The Penguins scored four straight points to extend the lead to 16-7 but the Silver Swords responded with a 10-2 run that pulled the Silver Swords within a point, 18-17. Dominican staved off the attack though with a Stocking-Siagrkis kill. The Silver Swords countered yet again to stay within reach but
Jessica Jones slammed down another kill. A Rains kill and another Jones kill, coupled with three attacking errors by Chaminade's Kim Springs, sealed up the match for the Penguins.
The Silver Swords had three players with double digit kills, led by Springs' 16. Brenda Walker was one of three Silver Swords with double digit digs and led all players with 23.
The Penguins will now head to the East Bay on Saturday, Oct. 12. They'll face PacWest rival Holy Names University for a 7:00 p.m. match before returning home for a non-conference tilt with Ursuline College on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
