Women's soccer dominates in PacWest rematch with ART U

Lauren Gollnick drives past ART U defender Jasmine Leonhardt in the Penguins' 3-0 PacWest victory on Sunday.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Last Monday, when the Dominican University of California women's soccer team headed to San Francisco, the Penguins needed 105 minutes to beat the Academy of Art University Urban Knights. On Sunday at home on Kennelly Field, the Dominican women needed less than a minute.

Kaila Wakida, who scored the game-winner in double overtime on Monday, got the start on Sunday and made the most of it with yet another goal against the Urban Knights (2-7-1/1-3-1). Her goal held on to be the game-winner and two more goals gave the Penguins (5-4-2/2-2-1) a convincing 3-0 victory. The win was the third straight for Dominican, who moves to above the .500 mark headed into a four-game road trip to Hawai'i.

Wakida's goal came on a header after a nice cross from Jill Thomas. The ball was misplayed by ART U goalie Rachel Rempe, which allowed Wakida to put the Penguins on the scoreboard early.

Mckenna Kimball added her team-leading fourth goal in the 36th minute to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead at intermission. Lauren Gollnick found Kimball open in front of the goal from the left side.

Gollnick added her third goal of the season in the 68th minute off of Jessica Ramirez's deflected shot.

The goal was the third in as many games for Kimball, who has eight of her 10 points in the last three matches.

"It is always a challenge to compete in any conference match up but to play an opponent back-to-back is an even greater challenge," said Head Coach Tara Koleski. "We have been talking about earning results and capitalizing on our opportunities and today was a perfect example of our capabilities to do so."

Dominican dominated possession and launched 14 shots while holding the Urban Knights to eight, only four on frame.

Megan Herring notched her fourth win of the season in goal for the Penguins. She saved all three balls that came her way to preserve her fourth shutout of the season.

"This is a great match for our team confidence and shows our individual efforts pay off," added Koleski. "We needed this confidence as we head on the road."

The Penguins now leave for a weeklong swing through the Hawaiian islands for four games. The first of three games on Oahu begins on the island's North Shore at BYU-Hawaii on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 12:30 p.m. The trip concludes on Saturday, Oct. 19 at UH Hilo.
