Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball notched its first Pacific West Conference win with a balanced attack in a four-set victory (25-12, 17-25, 25-17, 25-9) over UH Hilo.
Senior setter
Kelsey Lardner set the tone by matching a career-high 54 assists. She found
Jessica Jones for 16 kills and freshman
Susanna Pilkerton came off the bench to add 10 kills and three block assists. Middle blockers
Megan Callen and
Samantha Rains each had nine kills while Rains had three block solos and a pair of block assists. Dominican's back row defense was stellar, with freshmen
Amanda Lee and
Madeline Powelson making 18 digs and 12 digs each.
The Penguins (2-13/1-6) led early in set one, 6-2, and never looked relinquished the lead en route to a 25-22 win. Dominican fell behind early and never quite got things going in set two though, which allowed UH Hilo (5-6/0-6) to even the set at 1-1. The Penguins regained the lead with a 25-17 set three victory.
Powelson had six consecutive serves that helped build the lead to 12-3 in set four and
Valerie Larsen followed suit with seven consecutive serves to help build the lead to a commanding 20-4. Pilkerton helped close it out with three kills for the final, 25-19, and the match.
The Penguins face a tough road on Saturday night when BYU-Hawaii comes to the Conlan Center. The Seasiders are currently ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division II. The two teams will play at 6:00 p.m. Live coverage will be available at
