Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — On an emotional "Think Pink" night in the Conlan Center, the Dominican University of California breezed its way to a 3-0 (25-4, 25-9, 25-14) non-conference victory over visiting Mills College.
The larger story of the night came between sets two and three when Dominican Head Coach
Gayle Stammer took an opportunity to address the crowd, swathed in pink to show its support of Breast Cancer Awareness.
Stammer brought out her friend and former player, Alisha Booye, onto the court. Booye, 29, is currently battling breast cancer and attended the match despite having received treatment earlier in the day. She was diagnosed with breast cancer on July 17 and is scheduled in January to undergo a bilateral double mastectomy.
"Alisha is an amazing young lady. I coached her when she was 14, now she has a family," said Stammer. "She's very transparent and honest about what's going on in her life. I urge everybody to visit her blog. It's just a pleasure to have her in the gym and be able to spread the word."
In the match, the Penguins made quick work of the Cyclones (0-20) en route to Dominican's sixth consecutive victory. The Penguins (8-14) went on a 17-point run to close out set one. Hannah Stocking-Siagrkis stepped back for 16 consecutive serves and placed a career-high six aces in that time.
Dominican built a 3-0 lead to 8-1, then rattled off eight straight points to take set two nearly as quickly, 25-9. The Penguins actually started set three in a 5-2 hole but an 11-0 run turned things around for good and the Penguins never looked back en route to the 25-14 win, and the match.
Sari Kwan added a career-high five service aces. As a team, Dominican notched a season-high 18 aces, its most in the Division II era.
