Women's volleyball wins fifth straight, matches win total from 2012

Madeline Powelson had a double-double as the Lady Penguins swept NDNU on Tuesday night.
Box Score BELMONT, Calif. — Coming off of Pacific West Conference Freshman of the Week honors, Madeline Powelson recorded her second consecutive double-doubles with 11 kills and 11 digs. Her effort led the Dominican University of California women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17) sweep at Notre Dame de Namur on Tuesday evening.

It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Penguins, who matched their win total from 2012, and moved into a tie in the standings with Academy of Art, which Dominican beat 3-2 on the road this past weekend.

Jessica Jones added nine kills and a team-high 14 digs. Amanda Wasko added eight kills and Samantha Rains had seven. Libero Amanda Lee also dug out 11 balls.

The Penguins (7-14/5-7) scattered five service aces, with two coming from Wasko, while allowing none from NDNU (5-16/2-10).

Set one started out evenly until Dominican used an 8-1 run to take a 14-9 lead and eventually take the set 25-18.

The second set found the Penguins in an early 8-3 hole. Dominican went on a 10-4 run though to take a 14-12 lead, then outscored the Argonauts at a 2-1 clip to build the lead to 20-16. Kills by Rains, Jones, and Megan Callen sealed that set, 25-20.

Dominican kept it rolling in set three with a 9-2 start. That gave Dominican Head Coach Gayle Stammer a chance to get everybody into the mix. The Penguins went back to Powelson to finish things and she slammed down the kill to give the Penguins the match 25-17, and the match.

"I think we started off strongly, which was nice. In set two we had a slow start but I'm happy that they were able to change that and turn it around, take care of business, and move forward in that situation," said Stammer. "I thought Kelsey ran our offense very well and it's always nice to be able to get everybody playing time. It only makes our team stronger as a unit."

Dominican will now host Mills College in a non-conference contest on Friday, Oct. 25, which is Think Pink night. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and help the Lady Penguins raise Breast Cancer awareness. On Saturday, Oct. 26, Dominican hosts a PacWest rematch versus rival Holy Names University. That is Chilly's Cove and Alumni night, where Dominican volleyball alumnae are invited to enjoy free beer, snacks, pizza, and more as they  cheer on their current counterparts. Sideout for both games is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Conlan Center.
