Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Goals from
Mckenna Kimball and
Jessica Hinsken each scored on Wednesday to lift the Dominican University of California women's soccer team to its first Pacific West Conference victory of the season. The 2-0 victory over Bay Area rival Holy Names University also gave Dominican its second consecutive victory and evened the Penguins' record at 4-4-2.
"We have some personalities emerging and making a huge impact right now," said Head Coach
Tara Koleski. "It's good to know that we have some depth and go-to players."
That depth came in the form of a pair of freshmen and a junior co-captain.
In the 34th minute, freshman
Stephanie Pawek played a ball into Kimball, who had a nice touch, drove around the HNU keeper and buried the shot for the eventual game-winner. The goal was Kimball's third of the year and second in as many matches. The junior now has eight points on the season.
In the 51st minute, Pawek had a good opportunity to extend the lead. Her shot from the left side to the far post challenged the Hawks defense but goalie Jenni Dooley made a diving save to stop the threat. Holy Names (3-5-0/0-3-0)
Michelle Gonzalez had the best scoring opportunity for Holy Names in the 56th minute but Pawek worked hard on both ends of the field and headed a potential goal out of the box.
Dominican countered with a few one touches betweek
Kaila Wakida and
Lauren Gollnick but the Penguins (4-4-2/1-2-1) didn't score again until Hinsken's goal in the 81st minute. The freshman came off the bench for her first collegiate goal by turning the defender and getting a shot off. The initital shot was saved by Dooley but Hinsken received the rebound, dribbled past Dooley and into a wide open net.
The shutout was the fourth of the season for goalkeeper
Megan Herring, who made three stops to lift her save percentage to .833 on the season.
"It's nice to find a way to win games and come up with a W even when our performance starts to struggle at those last bits of the game. Our work ethic supercedes anything we're doing at this point," said Koleski. "We're working and getting the job done. Having a conference win is a step in the right direction."
