Volleyball wins fourth straight in five-set thriller

Amanda Wasko had a career-high 19 kills in Dominican's 3-2 win at ART U on Saturday.
Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team stayed hot on Saturday in breezy San Francisco with a five-set thriller (17-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-20, 15-11) over Pacific West Conference rival Academy of Art University at Kezar Pavilion.

The Penguins (6-14/4-7) got off to a shaky start and fell quickly in set one, 25-17. They returned the favor though in set two. Up 9-6, the lead grew to 17-9 thanks to kills by Jessica Jones, Laura Price, and Madeline Powelson. From there, the two teams traded points with the Penguins hanging on for the 25-17 win. While set three was close throughout, the Urban Knights (9-11/5-7) built an early 5-1 lead and held on to take back the match lead with a 25-19 set.

While set four was awarded to Dominican, controversy ensued. After the set was whistled over, officials and coaches gathered at the scorer's table. After a ten-minute delay, it was determined that Dominican's Sari Kwan inadvertendly served in back-to-back attempts, causing Dominican to serve out of order. A hearty roar from the ART U bench and crowd was quickly silenced though as an Urban Knights attacking error gave the Penguins the point, and the set, back.

That momentum carried into the fifth set, where Dominican took a 3-0 lead. From there, the Penguins built it to 10-5, and only fittingly — with Kwan back to serve match point — another ART U attack error gave Dominican the point, 15-11.

After the dust had settled, four Penguins had recorded double-doubles. Amanda Wasko had a career-high 19 kills and 12 digs; Madeline Powelson had 13 kills and a career-high 19 digs; Jones had 10 kills and 11 digs; and Kelsey Lardner had 49 assists and 15 digs. Kwan and libero Amanda Lee each added 16 digs in the victory, as the Penguins combined for 97 digs. Samantha Rains had six block assists while Dominican combined for 11 on 22 assisted blocks.

ART U was led by Emiy Papale's 18 kills.

"I think that was a great match for us, we've been practicing closing out matches and it's been paying off recently," said Head Coach Gayle Stammer. "I expected this would be a battle with Academy and I'm pleased that we came out ahead, especially away. I'm really proud of the way that our girls stepped up tonight."

Dominican will look to make it five in a row when the Penguins head to Notre Dame de Namur University on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Sideout is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Belmont, Calif.
