Playing man down in second half, women's soccer falls at HPU

Megan Hanson had one of Dominican's three shots on goals on Thursday. The Penguins played nearly an entire half a man down.
Box Score KANEOHE, Hawai'i — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team played to a scoreless halftime but two goals in the second half while the Penguins were down a player on the field resulted in a 2-0 Pacific West Conference loss to Hawai'i Pacific University on Thursday.

The Penguins (6-6-2/3-4-1) outshot HPU (5-7-0,3-4-0) 6-4 in the first half but were unable to capitalize.

Jessica Ramirez was issued a red card just over a minute into the second half and the Penguins were forced to play a man down the remainder of the contest. Dominican held its ground until the 66th minute. Lexi Cameau found Andrea Aguirre, whose quick touch after the free kick broke the scoreless ballgame.

The Sea Warriors, who outshot the Penguins 9-3 with the player advantage, added an insurance goal in the 88th minute on a header by Breanna Gaddis, from the corner kick by Ashlyn Ubongen.

Megan Herring made four saves while allowing the pair of HPU goals.

Lauren Gollnick, Megan Hanson, and Stephanie Pawek accounted for Dominican's three shots on goal.

The Penguins will look to split the road trip on Saturday when they hop islands to face UH Hilo. Kickoff is slated for 12:30 p.m. HST as part of a doubleheader with the men, who follow at 3:00 p.m. The Vulcans are arguably the strongest team that the Penguins will face on the trip, as they enter the contest with a 7-3-1 overall record and a 4-0-1 mark at home.
