Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California won its fourth match in five matches and second consecutive by sweep with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-23) victory over visiting Ursuline College in non-conference action.
Freshman
Madeline Powelson led all players with a career-high 11 kills on .296 hitting. She added three service aces, eight digs, and a couple of block assists.
Jessica Jones added 10 kills and
Amanda Wasko added seven.
Valerie Larsen was one of three players with double digit digs and led all players with 12. Libero
Amanda Lee added 11 and Wasko made 10 digs.
A 9-2 run gave the Penguins (5-14) an early 12-5 advantage in set one. From there, Dominican used another eight-point run to stretch the lead to 20-6 on a Powelson service ace. A
Kelsey Lardner service ace and
Laura Price kill closed out set one to give the Penguins an early lead in the match.
The Penguins built another lead, 13-6, to take command of set two, then rattled off seven consecutive points to build the lead to 20-7. Kills by
Samantha Rains and Powelson gave the Penguins the set, 25-10, and the 2-0 match lead.
Ursuline (10-10) came out hot in set three and took a 7-3 lead. Dominican clawed its way back to tie the set at 16-16 though, thanks to an Ursuline attack error and kills by Wasko and Powelson. With the set tied at 21-21, the Penguins racked up the next three points to earn match point. Ursuline made it interesting, pulling back within a point at 24-23, but an Ursuline attack error gave Dominican the match.
"We had this match scheduled so that we could come in and work on some of our offensive and defensive strategies," said Head Coach
Gayle Stammer. "I'm looking forward to going in and playing Academy of Art. They've had a very similar road that we have in our scheduling. I expect that we're both going to be very well versed and ready to play each other."
The Penguins return to Pacific West Conference action on Saturday, Oct. 19. Sideout is at 7:00 p.m. at Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco. ART U is 8-10 and will face Holy Names University, which the Penguins swept last Saturday, before hosting Dominican.
