SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team saw strong play from duo Irina Morozova and Emily Prescott, as well as Francesca Katafias at its own Dominican Fall Invitational.

"This weekend was good competition for the girls," said Head Coach Alex Poorta. "Every single player had at least one match where they excelled and gained some good momentum for next semester."

Morozova defeated Sonoma State's Sheena Johnson 6-1, 7-5 in Flight A singles competition to advance to the semifinals, where she fell to the Seawolves' Katilyn Haithcock 6-2, 6-4 (10-8).

Prescott topped Arizona Christian University's Jessica Trink 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals. There she topped Sonoma State's Lauren Ha 6-0, 6-1. She fell to Haithcock in the finals 6-4, 6-1.

In Flight B singles, Katafias swept Mills College's Alessandra Cuenco 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the semifinals, where she fell to Holy Names University's Jasmine Martinez 6-2, 6-3. She earned the win in the consolation bracket with a 8-0 win over Mills' Rachel Quimby.

Morozova and Prescott had a first round bye in doubles competition, then topped Sonoma State's pairing of Spencer Trotta and Karlee Budge 8-0. Haithcook haunted the Penguins yet again in the semifinals of doubles play, pairing with Hillary Fazekas, in a closely contested 8-7, 7-4 match.

"Emily showed much improvement this tournament and beat a strong player from Sonoma State in the semis," said Poorta. "Irina and Frankie Katafias both had good wins and displayed their character in high level matches."

The tournament wrapped up Dominican's three fall appearances. The team will have time off from competing until the spring when its championship season begins.
