Box Score OAKLAND, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team notched its third victory in four matches in convincing fashion, as the Penguins swept rival Holy Names University 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-22) on Saturday evening in Pacific West Conference play.
Dominican (4-14/3-7) got a well-balanced performance from
Amanda Wasko, who led players with 12 kills on .345 hitting. She also added 18 digs, a service ace, assist, and a block against the struggling Hawks (0-18/0-9).
Jessica Jones and Hannah Stocking-Siagrkis added eight kills each, while Stocking also played stellar defense with 17 digs. Libero
Amanda Lee led the Penguins with 20 digs.
"I think the team came in really confident so that helps, obviously. Wasko had one of her best all-around games, it was just a pleasure to watch that come together," said Dominican Head Coach
Gayle Stammer. "Her defense was extremely strong, as was
Amanda Lee's. She had some digs that I thought were on the floor."
Holy Names was led by Melissa Munley and Rachel Vartanian, who had eight kills apiece. Jedidah Hanakahi led all players with 21 digs.
The Penguins trailed early in set one but went on a 7-1 run to take a 10-6 lead, then another 8-1 run that forced a Holy Names timeout with the Penguins up 21-13. HNU rallied but the Penguins got kills from
Megan Callen,
Susanna Pilkerton, Jones, and Wasko to take the set 25-19.
Dominican didn't waste time in set two and took a 6-3 lead. A 5-1 Hawks run saw the lead slip away but with the match tied 10-10, Holy Names committed a pair of attack errors. Dominican never looked back with their next seven points coming off of kills. Another Wasko kill made it 25-18 and gave the Penguins the 2-0 lead.
A 2-0 lead went to waste in set three after the Hawks rattled off seven consecutive points. That forced Stammer to call timeout and her team responded. The Penguins tied the set at 10-10 and setter
Kelsey Lardner, who dished out 36 assists, gave the momentum back to the Penguins when she caught HNU's front row off guard with a dump that landed on the floor for a kill and an 11-10 Dominican lead. HNU caught back up, 16-16, but the Penguins scored five of the last six points in the set to take the match.
"Everybody was really spot on tonight," added Stammer. "They came in knowing they had an opportunity to win and I'm glad they were able to close it out with confidence."
The Penguins will host newly-minted NCAA Division II Ursuline College on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 6:00 p.m. Dominican is the second stop on a California swing for the Ohio-based Arrows, whose gym was destroyed in a devastating tornado in July. Live coverage will be available at
