Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. —
Julianna Bratsberg, a graduate student in Occupational Therapy, netted a three-goal hat trick in the first 45:45 of the game Thursday and the Dominican University of California women's soccer team coasted to a 7-0 non-conference victory over Simpson University at Kennelly Field in the John F. Allen Athletics Complex.
It is the most lopsided shutout win by the Penguins (2-3-0) since a 7-0 victory at Menlo College on Sept. 30, 2008 and the 36 shots they attempted against the Red Hawks (0-9-0) was the most by a Dominican women's team in a game since it fired 27 in a 5-1 win versus Menlo on Sept. 16, 2009.
It is the first time the LAdy Penguins and Red Hawks, former California Pacific Conference rivals, have played since Nov. 8, 2008 when Dominican won 3-0 in its final NAIA game before moving to NCAA Division II and the Pacific West Conference in 2009.
“It was important to continue to build on the win against Dixie State [on Monday] and how competitive we were in that game,” said
Jon Delano, Dominican's Director of Soccer. “We changed our formation and offensively we're doing some different things and doing a lot of functional stuff in practice. This was an opportunity to test it against a live opponent. Everyone got a chance to play and the players who came in contributed and the level didn't drop. There is a good sense of team amongst the girls right now.”
Sara Pimentel tallied two of the seven goals for the Penguins and had two other shots hit the crossbar, plus an assist.
Mckenna Kimball and freshman
Kayla Treanor scored the Lady Penguins' other goals while freshman
Lauren Gollnick had three assists and junior
Kelly Calton contributed two assists and
Stephanie Owens added a helper. Delano was able to play 22 players in the contest as Dominican dominated. With 30 minutes remaining in the game, the Penguins had notched 30 shots to one for Simpson.
Bratsberg, who was an All-CalPac player in 2008 as a freshman, scored the Lady Penguins' first two goals 45 seconds part in the first half on Thursday when Dominican outshot Simpson 23-1. Ramirez assisted Bratsberg on the first goal capping a six-minute spell when the Lady Penguins' midfielders and defenders kept the Red Hawks from even touching the ball on their offensive end of the field. Gollnick assisted on Bratsberg's next goal – the 25th of her Dominican career – with a corner kick that Bratsberg headed into the goal.
Kimball, a transfer from the United States Air Force Academy, extended the Penguins' advantage to 3-0 with an unassisted goal at the 25:25 mark of the first half.
Meanwhile, Dominican's defense was dominant. The back four of
Kendra Corsberg,
Kathryn Ripple,
Megan Hanson, and co-captain
Emily Whitaker was so efficient that Penguins starting goalkeeper
Megan Herring touched the ball only once in the first 45 minutes. She made save on a Kaylee Lommori shot at the 23:38 mark, the Red Hawks' only shot on goal.
Raquel "Rocky" Ramos took over in goal in the second half for the Lady Penguins.
With another assist from Gollnick, Bratsberg recorded her hat trick only 45 seconds into the second half. It was the 61st point in her career.
The Lady Penguins will return to PacWest play on Tuesday at Holy Names University in Oakland, one of four new members in the PacWest this season. Game time is 3:30 p.m. at Merritt College, where the Hawks host their home matches.
