Box Score BELMONT, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team was methodical on Thursday night. By taking care of the details, the Lady Penguins took care of Notre Dame de Namur University 3-0 on the Argos' home court in the two teams' first Pacific West Conference match of 2012.
Dominican (2-6/1-0) limited errors, placed the ball in empty parts of the court, blocked at the net, and served the ball into play all night long. With the first set tied 6-6, sophomore
Samantha Rains stepped back to serve, and her teammates worked in front of her for the next seven straight points to build a 13-6 lead. From there, Dominican built the lead to 20-10 and coasted to a 25-15 set.
A pair of kills by
Skyler Moon and one of
Jessica Jones' career-high 17 kills set the tone early as Dominican went up 4-0. Rains made a dozen straight serves as Dominican built the lead to 17-6. Up 23-16, the Argos (1-8/0-1) raillied for three straight points but back-to-back NDNU attack errors gave Dominican the set 25-9, Dominican's biggest single set margin of victory since a 25-8 frame at UC Santa Cruz on Oct. 10, 2009.
The Lady Penguins closed it out cleanly and quickly with strong, balanced play. Senior
Katy Batchelder served up an ace to punctuate the program's first sweep since Sept. 11, 2010 vs. Bethany University and the team's first-ever sweep in Pacific West Conference play.
"We hit over .300 tonight, it's just a sign of how focused we were tonight," said Head Coach
Gayle Stammer. "We're a tight-knit group and it's showing."
NDNU's leading hitter, Brooke DeMiguel, was limited to seven kills on 22 attempts.
Junior
Hannah Stocking-Siagkris made 11 kills and tallied a .625 attack percentage to go alon with 10 digs. Middles
Ashlee Sand and Moon recorded eight and five kills, respectively. Junior
Kelsey Lardner ran the offense effieciently and set a career-high in just three sets with 35 assists. Rains recorded three service aces and, along with freshman libero
Sari Kwan, led all players with 12 digs.
"We look forward to practice and matches are a test of how well we've done in practice. The last two tournaments and the practices in between have really prepared us," added Stammer. "We're working really hard in being disciplined in what we do and it's beginning to pay off."
