KENTFIELD, Calif. — No. 1 singles player
Irina Morozova earned a 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory over Alex Ivanova but the Dominican University of California women's tennis team dropped its match to visiting Southern Utah University on Friday at College of Marin. The Lady Penguins (2-7) fell 6-3 to the shorthanded NCAA Division I Thunderbirds (2-2).
Dominican's No. 1 singles team of Morozova and
Gaby Verspieren dropped just their third match of the spring and put up a close fight to Ivanova and Olia Tatarchenko before falling 8-6. Verspieren lost a close first set 7-5, then fell 6-3 in the number two singles match to Ksusha Johnson.
Jamie Fernandez and
Maria Paradis fell in the number two doubles match 8-7 to Johnson and Elizaveta Pleskan.
Jobeth Pascual bounced back from a quiet first set that she dropped 6-0 by forcing a tiebreaker before falling 0-6, 7-6, (6-10) to Afton Staheli.
"Today was a great college tennis match. We played hard and as a result all matches were close and came down to the wire," said Head Coach
Greg Kennett. "I'm especially proud of Irina for winning at one and Jobeth for coming back and taking her match to three sets. We have another tough match tomorrow and this help us."
Dominican is right back in action on Sunday as they travel across the Golden Gate Bridge to face Bay Area rival Academy of Art University. First serve versus the Urban Knights is slated for 11:00 a.m. in San Francisco.
