Lady Penguins Fall to Bay Area Rival ArtU

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team fell to a red-hot Academy of Art University squad on Saturday in an 8-1 loss at San Francisco Tennis Club.

The Lady Penguins (2-8) recorded their lone win of the day when Jamie Fernandez and Jobeth Pascual defeated the number three duo of Jenny Johansson and Maria "Belen" Tenorio 8-4. After putting together a three-match win streak the Lady Penguins' number one doubles duo of Irina Morozova and Gaby Verspieren dropped their third straight match to Kunkanda "Cartoon" Phukchampa and Amal Ben El Hadj 8-4. Jessica Curlett and Maria Paradis were quieted 8-0 by Diane Phan and Daniela Amelunge Antelo in the number two doubles match.

In singles play, Dominican was swept by the Urban Knights (7-5), who entered play with a three-match win streak and ranked number eight in the West Region by the ITA. With the six singles wins, the Knights improved to 24 straight singles victories. Morozova had the closest match and battled Phukchampa before falling 7-5, 7-6.

The Lady Penguins face another tough opponent on Wednesday, March 14 when they travel to NCAA Division I San Jose State. First serve is slated for 2:00 p.m.
