PHOENIX, Ariz. — Gaby Verspieren won her singles match and teamed with Irina Morozova to claim an impressive doubles victory, accounting for Dominican University of California's points in a 7-2 loss to the University of Hawai'i, Hilo on Thursday in the Grand Canyon University women's tennis tournament.

Verspieren, a transfer from Gonzaga University last fall, defeated Emelie Laussen 7-6, 6-2 in their No. 2 singles match that Head Coach Greg Kennett called “terrific… her best match as a Penguin.” In addition, Verspieren and Morozova won their second consecutive match of the season for Dominican (0-2) by dominating the Vulcans' top doubles team Laussen and Melanie Viriyapunt 8-1.

Morozova, the Lady Penguins' No. 1 singles player, engaged in the best match of the day, bowing to Viriyapunt 0-6, 6-3, 10-8.

The Vulcans played earlier in the day, losing 8-1 to host Grand Canyon.

The Lady Penguins move to the Paseo Racquet Club in Glendale, Ariz. on Friday to face UC San Diego, a team that was ranked No. 17 in the nation in NCAA Division II last November and ranked No. 4 in the West Region. Match time is 12:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Dominican has a scheduled tennis doubleheader. The Lady Penguins face Chaminade University at 12:30 p.m. and Dixie State College at 6:30 p.m. The Grand Canyon tournament, which started Wednesday, concludes on Sunday. Dominican takes on Montana State Billings at 12:30 p.m.
