BOX SCORE
TURLOCK, Calif. — Despite strong efforts by its No. 1 doubles team and its No. 6 singles player, the Dominican University of California women's tennis team had its two-match winning streak snapped on Saturday, losing 9-0 to a more experienced Cal State Stanislaus squad.
The loss left the Lady Penguins with a 2-5 record. The Warriors are 1-1.
“Even though the scores don't show it, we see improvement, especially in our lower lineup,” said Head Coach
Greg Kennett. “We really need to work on winning the crucial points in the match.”
Irina Morozova and
Gaby Verspieren, who were ranked No. 7 regionally last fall, suffered only their second defeat in eight matches this season as the Lady Penguins' top doubles team. They were beaten by the Warriors' unbeaten doubles team of Verena Preikschas and Katie Eng 8-4.
Preikschas, senior from Amsberg, Germany, also remained undefeated in singles, downing Morozova, a sophomore, 6-2, 6-2.
Verspieren, who won her three previous singles matches while losing only eight games, was beaten 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles by Eng, another CSUS senior. Senior
Jamie Fernandez, who plays No. 4 singles for Dominican, had her four match-winning streak stopped, losing 6-2, 6-1 to junior Kelsey Chrisco.
The closest the Lady Penguins came to winning a match against the Warriors was at No. 6 singles. Freshman
Jobeth Pascual put up quite a battle before bowing to CSUS senior Lindsey West 7-5, 6-3.
The Lady Penguins don't return to the courts for competition until March 9 at home against Southern Utah University.
