Lady Penguins Fall to Chaminade, Dixie State at Grand Canyon Tournament

Jesssica Curlett picked up her first invidviual victory of the season against Chaminade on Saturday.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team dropped a pair of matches to Pacific West Conference opponents Chaminade University and Dixie State Clollege on Saturday at the Grand Canyon University tournament.

Senior Jamie Fernandez and junior Jessica Curlett played well and earned individual victories against Chaminade. Fernandez earned  6-3, 6-0 victory in the number four singles match over Natalie Phanphengdy. Curlett edged Shayla Hosak 7-6, then won out 6-2 for her first victory of the 2012 campaign.

"Jessica played well today," said Head Coach Greg Kennett. "She kept the ball in play and got points."

Sophomore Irina Morozova and junior Gaby Verspieren suffered their first loss of the season as the Lady Penguins' No. 1 duo. They fell 9-8 to Yanita Arnaudova and Yuka Kondo. Morozova fell 6-0, 6-1 to Arnaudova and Verspieren fell 6-2, 6-1 to Kondo.

Junior Maria Ariana Paradis and freshman Jobeth Pascual both battled but eventually dropped their singles matches. Paradis fell 6-4, 6-3 to Jan Matsumoto in the number three spot. Isel Barba topped Pascual 6-4, 6-1 in the number five singles match to keep the Silver Swords unbeaten at 4-0.

Morozova and Verspieren bounced back against Dixie State with an 8-1 win in number one doubles play over Sarah Hughes and Krista Anderson. Morozova also defeated Anderson 6-2, 6-0 in the number one singles match. Verspieren faced Allison Long in the number two singles match and defeated Long 6-2, 6-3.

Fernandez knocked off Hughes 6-4, 6-3 in the number four singles match but the Lady Penguins came up shy, 5-4, in the match.

"Irina and Gaby bounced back nicely against Dixie State," added Kennett. "Jamie played two tough singles matches today and came out ahead in both of them. That's the kind of day we're looking to get out of her and that type of play can help us come out on top in the future."

On Sunday, the final day of the five-day Grand Canyon tournament, Dominican (0-5) will meet  Montana State Billings at 12:30 p.m.
