Lady Penguins Rally for Double Overtime Victory

Stephanie Owens (8) is congratulated by her teammates after scoring the game-winner in double overtime on Saturday.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Dominican University of California women's soccer team had to work overtime for the second time this week.

This time they were rewarded.

After playing to a double overtime scoreless draw on Thursday at Fresno Pacific University, the Lady Penguins came from behind on Saturday as freshman Stephanie Owens scored the second of her two goals with 3:43 remaining in the second overtime to give Dominican a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame de Namur University.  It was the first win by the Lady Penguins (4-4-1/3-2-1) over the Argonauts (4-7-1/3-4-1), their Pacific West Conference and longtime Bay Area rivals, since Oct. 29, 2009.

The game-winning goal by Owens was set up by a terrific pass from senior Alex Moran.

“It's just ironic that those two combined on the last play because I thought they were great for us today,” said Dominican Director of Soccer Jon Delano. “We talked about going into overtime trying to get in diagonally on them and Steph made a good run and Alex played a perfect ball. It was a fantastic ball.”

It capped an eventful day for Owens. She scored the game-tying goal with extra effort at the 24:30 mark of the first half. She received an excellent crossing pass by teammate Mckenna Kimball right in front of the goal and managed to kick it into the net before she was knocked off her feet.

Owens also missed excellent scoring opportunities to win the game early in the second half and in the opening seconds of the first 10-minute overtime period when teammates Lauren Gollnick and Jill Nunes set her up. In addition, she had a collision with NDNU goalkeeper Amy Rich in the goalmouth, yet  when Owens tried to get off the ground to retrieve the loose ball, Rich grabbed her leg without the referee seeing it.

Moments later, the game was stopped with 13:21 remaining in regulation time and delayed 25 minutes after Rich was hurt. She was transported to a local hospital as a precaution.

Her replacement, Carrie Turgeon, robbed Owens of a goal in the first overtime, but not the second.

“I'm just glad we won,” Owens said.

“I can't say enough good things about Steph for the whole season, but I thought she was great today,” Delano said. “She scored both goals. She was dynamic.”

So was Dominican goalkeeper Megan Herring and the four defenders in front of her – Kathryn Ripple, Kendra Corsberg, Megan Hanson, and Emily Whitaker. NDNU came into the game leading the PacWest in points this season, having scored 14 goals in their last four games, but Dominican's defense limited their scoring opportunities.

The Argonauts' only goal came off a set piece when Adriana Cortes hooked a free kick from just outside the box into the upper V of the inside the near post.

Otherwise, Herring made nine saves. She came into the game first in the PacWest in save percentage (.936) and was fifth in the nation in NCAA Division II last week (.914). It was a big win for the Lady Penguins considering they played without  Julianna Bratsberg, who was attending a conference for a school presentation.

The Lady Penguins will look for the win against Fresno Pacific this coming Wednesday, Oct. 10. The time the two teams will meet on Dominican's turf at Kennelly Field in the John F. Allen Athletics Complex. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
