Box Score FRESNO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw at Fresno Pacific University on Thursday. While it was the first overtime match and tie for Dominican (3-4-1/2-2-1), the Sunbirds (3-3-5/3-1-3) are no stranger to extra time. It was FPU's sixth overtime game of the season and fifth draw.
Dominican had an opportunity in the 83rd minute of Pacific West Conference action when freshman
Lauren Gollnick arched a corner kick into the box that was headed by sophomore
Kendra Corsberg but FPU keeper Sarah King was there to make the save. An FPU shot in the 87th minute by Sara Vega was blocked and Nayeli Deniz tried to score the rebound but Dominican keeper
Megan Herring got in front of the ball for one of her 12 saves on the night to force overtime.
The first overtime period saw a pair of Fresno Pacific shots but little else. In the second overtime period graduate student
Julianna Bratsberg and Gollnick applied pressure as the result of another set piece. Bratsberg had a shot blocked that set up the Lady Penguins' fifth corner kick of the night. Gollnick played another ball, this time to Bratsberg and King left the goal to challenge the shot, which was blocked by FPU defender Caressa Archie. With the net still open, Gollnick raced in just to have her shot also blocked by Archie. Gollnick had another shot at the 106-minute mark but King made her third and final save. In the 109th minute, FPU's points leader Jae Slocum had a one-on-one with Herring but the Dominican junior yet again preserved the shutout as time expired seconds later.
Herring, who entered the week fifth in NCAA Division II save percentage (.914) boosted her clip to .936.
"We forced them to take a lot of tough shots, from as far out as 35 yards. We're getting better offensively and we had good scoring opportunities," said Director of Soccer
Jonathan Delano. "It's important to be able to go on the road like this and get the shutout and leave with the draw."
Dominican hosts Notre Dame de Namur University on Saturday, Oct. 6. The Lady Penguins will look to avenge a 2-1 loss that spoiled the Lady Penguins' final game on Forest Meadows Field.
