Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The frustration of the first half of the season for the Dominican University of California women's soccer team was washed away on Thursday with a flood of goals at Forest Meadows Field.
The Lady Penguins erupted for four goals in a 19-minute span in the first half to defeat Chaminade University 5-1 for their first Pacific West Conference victory of the season. They responded well to their coaches' challenge in practice the previous day.
“Yesterday was probably not an enjoyable training session for the girls because we really just focused in offensively and broke some things down,” said Dominican Director of Soccer
Jon Delano. “I think we were very good offensively in getting numbers in the box today. We were very sharp to start the game.”
Following a pep talk by her coaches, sophomore
Tori Selesia had two goals and assisted on the game's first tally by freshman
Kendra Corsberg. That ended a scoreless streak dating back to Sept. 7.
“We hammered Tori pretty good yesterday just about how we needed more production out of her,” said Delano. “I thought she did a really good job of turning it on today. The first assist she got was fantastic and the two goals were very good.”
Selesia took her coaches' comments to heart to do a better of finishing her shots and crossing passes.
“I wanted to keep playing,” she said. “Message received.”
Sophomore
Michelle Bella had the other first-half goal and an assist for Dominican (3-5-0, 1-3-0) while her classmate,
Lexi Humphry, also recorded an assist against Chaminade (1-7-0/1-4-0).
Freshman
Sara Pimentel tallied the Penguins' final score off an assist by
Mallory Engelhardt with 50 seconds to go in the game.
Defensively, the Penguins controlled play in the middle third and the offensive third of the field, leading to a relatively easy day for Dominican goalkeeper
Megan Herring. After making 20 saves in two games at Cal Baptist last weekend, Herring was called upon to make only one save (off a free kick from 30 yards) against the Silverswords. She was replaced in goal at halftime by freshman
Raquel "Rocky" Ramos.
The Dominican back line of
Katie Brown,
Megan Hanson,
Carrie Freyer, and
Emily Whitaker prevented any offensive runs by Chaminade and midfielders
Shayna Elkins and Corsberg were efficient in pressing the Penguins forward against the young Silverswords. Chaminade's starting lineup included six freshmen and four sophomores.
With freshman
Jillian Nunes starting in place of the team's leading point scorer
Julianna Bratsberg (academic obligation), the Lady Penguins found plenty of players to produce points in the first half.
Corsberg's first goal of her Dominican career came by way of a crossing pass by Selesia with 39:49 remaining in the first half. Selesia made it 2-0 eight minutes later off a beautiful through diagonal pass by Humphry.
Selesia scored her second goal on a diagonal move off a pass by Bella to extend the Dominican advantage to 3-0, then Bella capped the first-half scoring with 20:28 left before intermission with an unassisted goal.
With the luxury of a strong effort and a large lead, Delano was able to play 20 players in the contest.
Dominican is off until Tuesday, October 4 when the Lady Penguins play NCAA Division I San Jose State at the 30,000-seat Spartan Stadium. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
