Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The defense of the Dominican University of California women's soccer team did it best to limit the scoring chances of fast-paced California Baptist in a Pacific West Conference game on Saturday, but it couldn't muster enough offense in a 3-0 defeat.
Despite 10 saves by sophomore goalkeeper
Megan Herring, Dominican (2-4-0/0-2-0) was outshot 26-4 in the game by Cal Baptist (6-1-1/2-0-1). The Lancers came into the match leading the PacWest by far with an average of 24 shots a game, including 28 in its previous game against Notre Dame de Namur University.
Herring entered the game as the PacWest's third-leading goalkeeper, with a 1.20 goals against average.
“We really buckled down in the second half and tried to play better and use our technical ability to our advantage,” said Dominican Director of Soccer
Jon Delano. “I thought our soccer was pretty good in the second half.”
Michelle Bella had the game's first shot for Dominican, but then Cal Baptist had 13 shots and scored two goals in the first half before
Kendra Corsberg recorded the Lady Penguins' next shot 27 minutes after the first one.
Kimberly Allard, taking advantage of a rare Herring miscue, tallied her league-leading seventh goal in the eighth game of the season for the Lancers. Teammate Kylee Nicassio netted two goals in the contest, her fifth and sixth of the season. She had eight shots in the contest.
Alex Moran had the only shot on goal for Dominican. Teammate
Tori Selesia was one of four Lady Penguins to record a shot, yet the Lady Penguins had better opportunities in the second half.
“We had some set pieces and we probably had four or five balls that ran across the goal mouth,” said Delano. “We were into it. We've got to be a little more decisive in our actions when we get to the attacking third.”
Dominican will get a shot at revenge on Monday when it plays the Lancers in the same place at the same time, 2:00 p.m.
