LAIE, Hawaii — Eighth-seed Dominican University of California earned just one doubles victory but captured four singles matches versus #7 Dixie State in beating the Red Storm 5-4 and claiming seventh place at the 2011 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday.
Dominican freshmen
Shannon McCarthy-Contreras and
Irina Morozova teamed at first doubles to defeat Allison Long and Lindsay Snow 8-3.
But Dixie State charged back thanks to second doubles tandem Sarah Hughes and Hillary Wright who defeated senior
Tami Tan and junior
Jamie Fernandez 8-4.
Dixie State's Kelley Terry and Lauren Tarver claimed third doubles 9-8 in edging seniors
Anh Truong and
Michele Freitas.
But the Lady Penguins used the four individual wins to eke out a one-point victory. Morozova defeated Long 6-0, 6-3 at first singles, while second singles belong to McCarthy-Contreras over Lauren Tarver 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
Wright captured third singles for the Red Storm after she beat Fernandez 6-3, 6-4, but Freitas countered with a 6-0, 6-0 dusting of Snow at fourth singles for Dominican.
Hughes was a double-winner for Dixie State after she also claimed fifth singles over Tan 6-1, 6-0, but it wasn't enough after Truong swept Terry 6-4, 6-1 at sixth singles.
Dominican will finish the season with a home match versus the University of Hawai'i, Hilo on Friday, April 22. That will also be Senior Day for the Lady Penguins, where seniors
