LAIE, Hawaii – Fourth-seed Academy of Art University earned all three doubles matches and claimed two quick singles victories to shutout #8 Dominican University of California 5-0 in the consolation semifinals of the 2011 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Friday.
The Urban Knights will face the winner of #6 Hawai'i Hilo and #7 Dixie State at 2:00 p.m. HT on Saturday, April 16 in the fifth-place match. The loser of that contest will battle Dominican for seventh place on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. HT.
Kunkanda Phukchampa and Laone Botshoma beat the freshmen duo of
Irina Morozova and
Shannon McCarthy-Contreras 8-3 at first doubles, while Amal Ben El Hadj and Diane Phan defeated junior
Jamie Fernandez and senior
Tami Tan 8-2 at second doubles.
Third doubles belonged to Courtney DeWalt and Paola Correa Fe who rolled over seniors
Michele Freitas and
Anh Truong 8-2.
Botshoma then swept McCarthy-Contreras 6-1, 6-3 at second singles, leaving Maria Tenorio to seal the win at fifth singles with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over
Tami Tan.
