LAIE, Hawai'i — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team was swept 5-0 to host BYU-Hawaii in the opening round of the 2011 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Tuesday.
With the loss, Dominican falls to 5-10 while BYU-Hawaii remains undefeated at 24-0. BYU-Hawaii is ranked No. 2 in the nation in the national ITA Division II women's tennis poll. The number one seeded Seasiders are also in search of their fifth coneseuctive conference title since the PacWest reformed under its current structure for the 2006-07 athletic season.
Elwen Li Boud and Yuan Jia defeated the freshmen duo of
Irina Morozova and
Shannon McCarthy-Contreras by the score of 8-0. Shawni Porter and I-Hsuan Annie Hwang defeated senior
Tami Tan and junior
Jamie Fernandez and Sasha Ulbrichtova and Salina Aranda defeated seniors
Anh Truong and
Michele Freitas, all by the score of 8-1.
Morozova's number one singles match was not completed by the time McCarthy-Conteras and Fernandez were defeated in the number two and three matches. McCarthy fell 6-1, 6-0 to Jia. Fernandez was swept in straight sets by Aranda.
On Wednesday, April 15, Dominican will face Academy of Art University, who fell to Chaminade during play on Tuesday, in the PacWest Consolation Semifinal. First serve is slated for 10:45 a.m. HT.
