OAKLAND, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team used strong singles play on Saturday and snapped its three-game skid by earning the sweep of NCAA Division III Mills College. With the victory, Dominican improves to 4-7, surpassing the three matches they won last season, while Mills falls to 1-6.

Despite winning victories in all three doubles matches, the Lady Penguins (4-7) didn't appear dominant. The number one singles pairing of freshmen Irina Morozova and Shannon McCarthy-Contreras earned an 8-3 victory over Quinn Harris and Christine Ferry. Senior Michele Freitas and junior Jamie Fernandez earned the number two victory, 8-5, over Corrin Geibig and Cheryl Sundheim. Seniors Anh Truong and Tami Tan captured the 8-4 victory over number three doubles players Casey Honath and Emily Backucz.

McCarthy-Contreras played well in the number two singles slot and posted the lone shutout of the day, 6-0, 6-0, over Harris. Morozova, at number one, and Freitas, at number three, each settled down in the second set and earned their singles victories 6-1, 6-0. Fernandez and Tan each made quick work of their opponents early, 6-0, before earning the 6-2 victory in the second set. Truong did the same and won the number five match 6-0, 6-1.

Dominican will be back on the courts on Monday, March 14 when Dixie State College comes to San Rafael. First serve against the Red Storm is slated for 10:00 a.m. at the Forest Meadows Tennis Courts.
