Lady Penguins Fall to Division I Southern Utah

Freshman Irina Morozova was one of five players with international roots in Friday's match versus Southern Utah.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis fell 9-0 on Friday against NCAA Division I Southern Utah at Forest Meadow Tennis Courts. It was a match that featured a lot of international talent, with five student-athletes having originally called another country home. With the loss, Dominican falls to 3-6 on the season while SUU improves to 2-0.

The number one singles match between Dominican freshman Irina Morozova and SUU junior Ksusha Nazarova was the single matchup that saw international players on opposing sides of the net. Nazarova, a native of Moscow, Russia, defeated, Morozova, who is originally from Ukraine, 6-4, 6-1. The SUU roster also featured players from Ukraine and Australia. No other lady Penguin fared better than 6-1, 6-1 in singles play.

Morozova and fellow freshman Shannon McCarthy-Contreras fell to Nazarova and fellow Russian Olia Tatarchenko 8-2 in doubles play. The duo of senior Michele Freitas and junior Jamie Fernandez and the pair of junior Ryan Paulus and senior Anh Truong each fell 8-1 in their doubles matches.

On Saturday, March 5 the Lady Penguins travel to Oakland to face NCAA Division III Mills College. First serve is slated for 10:00 a.m. Dominican swept the Cyclones 9-0 In the two teams' last meeting on Feb. 12.
