SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's tennis team lost a pair of road matches over the weekend, falling 8-1 at Academy of Art University on Saturday and 9-0 to No. 18 Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday. With the losses, the Lady Penguins fall to 3-6 on the season.
On Saturday, freshman
Irina Morozova played tight with ace Kukanda Phukchamp but eventually fell 7-5, 6-2. The Lady Penguins were without their number two singles players,
Shannon McCarthy-Contreras, at AAU (4-2) so senior
Michele Freitas slid up a spot but fell 6-0, 6-1 to Diane Phan. Junior
Jamie Fernandez, seniors
Tami Tan and
Anh Truong, and sophomore
Jessica Curlett were all bested in their singles matches, although Truong forced a tiebreaker in the number five position.
Truong and Freitas earned the lone victory of the day with a 9-8 (7-5) doubles victory over Paola Correa Fe and Cecilia Hedin.
McCarthy-Contreras was back in the lineup on Saturday against the nationally-ranked Warriors (2-2) but she fell 6-1, 6-4 against Cal State Stanislaus' Katie Eng. Fernandez forced a tiebreaker in the number four spot but fell 6-4, 2-6, (10-5), to McKenzy Harden. McCarthy-Contreras and Fernandez made it close against Vanesa Reibstein and Erin McGurty in the number two doubles match but were bested 8-6.
On Friday, March 5, Dominican plays host to NCAA Division I Southern Utah University. First serve is slated for 2:00 p.m. at Forest Meadows Tennis Courts.
