Lady Penguins fall to Regionally Ranked Teams, Beat Cal Tech

Anh Truong had a strong weekend for the Lady Penguins, who earned the 6-1 victory over CalTech on Saturday.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — On Saturday and Sunday, the Dominican University of California women's tennis team faced stiff competition in a pair of regionally ranked teams, Sonoma State and No. 18 Cal State Stanislaus, as well as NCAA Division III Cal Tech.

On Saturday, the Lady Penguins were swept by host Sonoma State, who is ranked No. 9 in the ITA NCAA Division II West Region poll. Senior Anh Truong came close but fell in the number six singles match to Lauren Ha, 7-5, 7-6. In number two doubles competition, senior Michele Freitas and junior Jamie Fernandez came up short 8-5 against Megan White and Anastasia Eilseeva.

The Dominican women fared a bit better on Sunday but fell 7-2 to visiting Cal State Stanislaus, who entered at No. 18 in the ITA NCAA Division II National poll and No. 4 in the ITA NCAA Division II West Region poll. Truong had another strong day, defeating Aubree Brenda 6-2, 6-1 in the number six position. Truong teamed with Fernandez in the number three doubles competition to earn the 8-4 victory over Brenda and Lexy Harrington.

Against NCAA Division III Cal Tech, the Lady Penguins got back on track with a 6-1 victory. Freshman Irina Morozova earned the number one singles victory 6-3, 6-4 over Rebekah Kitto while Freitas needed a tiebreaker to earn the number three singles victory, 6-4, 2-6, (10-7), over Jessica Yu. Fernandez earned the number three singles win 6-4, 6-0 while senior Tami Tan recorded the number five victory, 6-3, 1-6, (6-3), over Jessica Yeung. Truong earned the number six singles victory yet again with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Michelle Tang and Truong paired with Tam in the lone doubles match to eclipse Cici Yi and Yeung 8-3. The other two doubles matches were not played due to insufficient light.

Dominican now stands at 3-4. The Lady Penguins will travel to San Francisco on Saturday, Feb. 26 to face fellow Pacific West Conference member Academy of Art University. First serve is slated for 10:00 a.m.
