Box Score ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team suffered a 4-0 Pacific West Conference defeat to Dixie State College on Saturday afternoon, yet the final score was deceptive.
The Lady Penguins (3-7-0, 1-4-0) trailed only 1-0 at halftime and played the Red Storm (4-6-0, 2-2-0) even for most of the game, but were felled because of three lightning-quick Dixie State goals in a span of 4:18 in the second half.
The Red Storm got some measure of revenge. The last time Dominican played at Dixie State — Nov. 3, 2009 —
Mallory Engelhardt scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 upset win over the Red Storm, who had been undefeated (11-0) in conference play up to that point.
“I'm not angry with the way that we played. I thought we played well. I thought we worked hard,” said Dominican Director of Soccer
Jon Delano. “It's just that we didn't take advantage of our chances.”
Led by
Katie Brown, who had three shots, and
Julianna Bratsberg and
Tori Selesia, who had two apiece, the Lady Penguins had nine shots and almost as many shots on goal (6-5) as the Red Storm. But of Dixie State's five shots on goal, four went in.
Dixie State scored first, 11:32 into the game. Camille Jensen set up Red Storm teammate Kimberly Thurman with a pass in front that Thurman converted into a goal from the left, about eight yards out.
The Lady Penguins had a couple of scoring opportunities in the first half on shots by Selesia and Brown.
Megan Herring, Dominican's sophomore goalkeeper, had two saves on seven shots. Herring came into the game second in the PacWest in saves per game (5.22), third in total saves (47), and fourth in save percentage (.783) and goals against average (1.57).
Dixie State, however, caught Dominican and Herring on a counter about five minutes into the second half. Following a
Michelle Bella shot, the Red Storm rushed to the other side of Hansen Field and Jensen scored to make it 2-0.
Less than two minutes later, Dixie State extended its lead to 3-0 as Aria Hadley headed a corner kick by Jensen.
A little more than two minutes after that, Jennifer Mason upped the score to 4-0, kicking a rebound off of a Dominican defender into the back of the net.
Raquel "Rocky" Ramos replaced Herring in goal for the final 27 minutes.
“We played pretty well the entire game,” said Delano. “The second goal that they scored was an exceptional goal. The third goal was on the back post. The fourth one was a deflection. It's not as if we played bad soccer, we actually played pretty good soccer. Some of the balls didn't bounce our way.”
The Lady Penguins will play next on Monday, October 10. Game time is 5:45 p.m. at PacWest opponent Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.
