PacWest Packs Punch
The inaugural campaign of Dominican men's and women's basketball teams' entry into NCAA Division II play in the Pacific West Conference concluded with two home games in March against BYU-Hawaii and Chaminade University. The season produced some memorable results as senior guard
Alisha Flaaten became the all-time career scoring leader in Dominican's women's basketball history on February 18, surpassing the 15-year-old record of 1,487 points by
Jennifer Rogers Fernandez. Meanwhile, freshman
Austin Bryan finished the season leading the PacWest in scoring in men's basketball, despite sustaining a season-ending knee injury on February 20 that sidelined him the final four games. If not for Dominican's exploratory year in NCAA Division II, Bryan would have been officially listed among the top 50 scorers in the nation.
Men's Lacrosse
With 16 freshmen – the largest recruiting class in the six-year history of Dominican lacrosse – the Penguins' youth and inexperience was evident early in the season in games against Colorado College and Notre Dame de Namur University before they earned their first win of the season for coach
Ned Webster on February 28 against Southwestern University. The Penguins are currently in the middle of a four-game, nine-day road trip to New York. Their only home game in March is on Sunday afternoon, March 21, against Grand Canyon University.
Softball
The Lady Penguins opened their season by nearly winning a doubleheader at Notre Dame de Namur University, but they still have quite a road ahead of them. A long one. Dominican's March schedule starts with six doubleheaders, all away, including their current eight-game swing through Hawai'i. Coach
Bob Herman's team finishes March, however, with a pair of doubleheaders at home against both Hawai'i Pacific University and BYU-Hawaii.
Women's Tennis
New coach
Greg Kennett scored a victory in his team's first match at Notre Dame de Namur University on February 11 and then the Lady Penguins claimed win no. 2 on February 27 against Mills College. Dominican has six home matches in March.
Men's and Women's Golf
After season-opening tournaments in Washington, Arizona, and southern California, new golf coach
Marsha O'Neill is looking for improvement as the Penguins prepare to host the Dominican Invitational at Peacock Gap Golf Club in San Rafael on March 15 and 16.
PENGUIN PROFILES
Reed Upson
The 6-foot, 185-pound sophomore midfielder from Davis tallied six goals in the Penguins' first win of the season, a 20-6 thumping of Southwestern University. Upson, a business major, led the team with nine goals through the first three games.
Stephanie Lemp
Playing No. 1 singles for the women's tennis team, the 5-foot-9 senior won her first two matches of the season in straight sets, losing only nine games. Lemp, a psychology major, is from Castro Valley, Calif.
