Penguins fall to Eagles

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer fell 4-1 to Concordia University Irvine on a chilly Thursday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

The Golden Eagles maintained possession and picked their spots early with Maddie Klasey delivering the first scoring chance of the game as she got her right foot on a ball in the box and knocked it off the upper woodwork in the 16th minute. Irandy Erazo went 1-on-1 with the Penguins Angelina Hert in the 27th minute as Hert closed the angle and made the save, but was tripped retreating to her goal as a defender cleared the ball. Hailey Havican took advantage burying the shot into an empty net for the 1-0 CUI lead.

The Golden Eagles added to their lead in the 38th minute as a handball at the top of the box set up Erazo who put the ball perfectly into the upper right corner on the set piece to take the 2-0 lead. Megan Clapinski had a similar opportunity on the other side as a foul 20 yards from net gave a set piece to Dominican and her shot attempt was inches above the crossbar in the 40th minute.

In the 59th minute, Brisa Navarette made a perfectly placed through ball to Araceli Mejia who turned and tried to get a right footed shot on the frame but it was deflected by the toe of a CUI defender. Reagan Van Horn had a good shot inside the box that was blocked by the leg of a Penguin defender but it bounced right back to Nicole Ihlein who buried the rebound attempt for the 3-0 lead in the 67th minute.

Dominican mounted some good pressure over the next 20 minutes as Ysabella Belandres raced the keeper towards a ball in the near post getting a foot on it, but Erica Ihlein was able to slide in front of the attempt to protect her net. In the 77th, minute Audrey Nakashima put a through ball into Ireland O'Donnell who screened her defender and put home a left footed shot for the first goal of her career. The momentum was short served as CUI added a goal in the 79th minute to retake their three-goal advantage and close out the game.

Dominican will play host to Vanguard for the first time as it celebrates Senior Day on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
