SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer won an emotional 1-0 match Saturday over Vanguard on Senior Day at Kennelly Field.
The match was largely contested in the midfield with the Penguins (7-9-1, 3-6-0 PacWest) finishing with seven shots, while the Lions (3-9-2, 2-6-2 PacWest) finished with four.
Natalie Haro earned one final shutout at her homefield on her senior day as she collected two saves on the day.
Alyssa Fong had the first opportunity of the match testing Haro towards the bottom right corner but Haro was right there to make the save in the second minute.
Precious Martinez then loosed a shot in the 11th for Dominican as she sought to score her first career goal on senior day, but Jordin Holmquist-Wilder made the save to her right to keep the game scoreless.
The Penguins brought on fresh legs for offense in the 21st and the move paid off as their offensive pressure earned a corner kick in the 27th minute.
Jenna Pevenage sent it long towards the left side of the six-yard box where Ashlynn Hill rose up and headed the ball back towards goal and into the back netting for the 1-0 lead. Dominican earned three more corners and had two additional shots, while holding Vanguard without any as it controlled the pace of play to end the half.
The Lions once again earned some early pressure as Rachel Penick sent a shot far post in an attempt to tie the game but Haro made the diving save to keep her net clean. Vanguard would add two corners but both times the Penguin defense was positioned correctly to clear the ball from harm. Hill looked to add to her day in the 77th minute with another quality chance, but Holmquist-Wilder covered the low shot. Dominican once again dominated ball possession over the final 13 minutes of play not allowing a single shot attempt to ice the game.
Dominican will conclude its season next Saturday as it travels south to face Westmont at 11 a.m. PDt at Thorington Field.
