SAN RAFAEL, Calif. –
Ashlyn Hill came alive to lead Dominican women's soccer to a 2-1 victory over Jessup on Saturday at Kennelly Field.
The Penguins (6-8-1, 3-5-0 PacWest) dominated the pace of play finishing with 18 shots with 10 on frame compared to five and four for the Warriors (3-10-2, 1-6-1 PacWest). Hill scored her first career brace to lead Dominican on offense while
Angelina Hert collected three saves in her net for the victory.
The Penguins dominated the first half with nine shots on goal in the half. Hill proved the catalyst the offense had been looking for as she made a perfectly timed run in the 17th minute and
Megan Clapinski slipped her a past behind the defense as she beat the keeper to the left post to take the 1-0 lead. Hill was at it again in the 25th minute as
Emma Wilson slotted home the through ball and Hill took one touch towards the keeper and went far post for the 2-0 lead.
Audrey Nakashima subbed in and made an immediate impact from her spot in the midfield as she worked herself into the box for a shot in the 32nd minute but Lille Aimes made the save.
Carmi Dotario then showed her wheels sprinting past the defense 30 seconds later but Aimes was able to stymie her attempt towards the far post as she kept the Jessup deficit at 2-0 entering the break.
The second half quickly took a physical tone as four yellow cards were handed out in the first 20 minutes. In the 66th minute, a free kick found its way to Hill who headed it towards the bottom left corner but Celeste Fernandez made the save for the Warriors. Dominican continued to take its time and run the clock until Jessup caught a break in the 87th minute as Mikaela Patterson slipped a ball behind the defense to Abella Waterman as the flag stayed down and she was able to turn and hit the back netting to cut the lead in half. Dominican would not allow another shot on goal for the final three minutes to preserve its victory.
The Penguins will return to the pitch Thursday to take on Concordia University Irvine at 3:30 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
