Box Score FRESNO, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis dropped another close match as Fresno Pacific held on in crucial matches for the 5-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Haak Tennis Center.
Elise Leik and Nayuma Subba got the Sunbirds (3-3) off to a strong start in doubles as they claimed a 6-1 victory, but
Gina Dudley and
Audrey Rafols evened the match for the Penguins (1-3) as they held on for the 7-5 win on the top court. All eyes turned to the second court where
Astrid Craig and
Haley Garcia of Dominican faced off with Sanne Brull and Daimy Paula of FPU. The match went back and forth with many close games, but Brull and Paula were able to secure a crucial break to narrowly hold on for the 6-4 win giving the Sunbirds the 1-0 lead after doubles.
Brull added a 6-2, 6-0 victory to open the scoring in singles while Leik held off
Zoe Coggins 6-4 in the first set before claiming the No. 6 singles match with a 6-2 victory in the second set to put FPU one singles victory from the clinch. Audrey Ouellet provided the clinching victory at No. 4 singles with a tightly contested narrowly 6-1, 7-6 (8) victory.
Dudley claimed a victory for the Penguins as she bounced back from a 7-6 loss in the opening set to claim a 6-2 victory in the second and then a 10-4 victory in the tiebreaking third. Garcia added a victory in No. 5 singles as she two fell in a narrow first set 7-5 before winning the next two 6-3, 10-4.
Dominican will have a quick turnaround as it hosts Stanislaus State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
