SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell to Hawaii Pacific 3-1 (25-19, 25-14, 25-20, 25-18) Saturday night at Conlan Center. The Penguins kept the Sharks on their toes, staying within single digits for all but one set, and winning the first point of all four.
Avery Schneider had herself a match and led Dominican with 10 kills, three block assists, and three digs.
Amani Abed came in right behind her with seven kills and two block assists.
Miekayla Surnip and Braenwynn Matthews were all over the floor and led the Penguins with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Camille Rivers was an asset on both sides of the ball with nine digs and 14 assists in the match.
Dominican stayed locked in through back-and-forth play to take a 5-3 lead that they held the entirety of the first set. Hawaii Pacific was within three points until Abed found the floor for a kill to spark a 5-0 run and put the Penguins up 19-12 and force a timeout. Dominican fought to keep their momentum and were able to capitalize on a pair of errors by Hawaii Pacific to seal the set 25-19 in their favor.
Set two began similar to the first with the Penguins earning the initial point. The score was all tied up at 5-5 until the Sharks took a lead they carried to win the set 25-14. Dominican again won the first point of set three, but Hawaii Pacific took an early lead. A 6-point scoring run brought the Penguins back within five at 15-10. The Sharks tried to stretch the lead but Dominican fought tough to narrow the gap to four at set point but a kill from Tehani Pescaia gave the Sharks the 25-20 victory.
The level of intensity was high as the final set began. The Penguins and Sharks both came out hungry for a set victory. Dominican took the first lead at 3-2. The teams traded points resulting in nine ties and three lead changes until Hawaii Pacific used a 7-0 run to open an 18-11 lead. The Penguins worked hard to stay in the game for two match points before the Sharks concluded the set 25-18.
Dominican will have a week to prepare for its next match Saturday at 2 p.m. PDT against Concordia Irvine at CU Arena.
