Penguins fall in three to Vulcans

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell to Hawaii Hilo 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-16) Thursday night at Conlan Center. 

Facing a short turnaround after facing Chaminade the day before, the Penguins battled to the end and had stats to show for it. Camille Rivers led the Penguins with 11 digs and nine assists on the match. Braenwynne Matthews led the attack with six kills and came in a close second for digs with nine. Ella Heckman came in right behind her with five kills. 

The Penguins took an early lead at the start of set one and held the score 5-4 in their favor. Despite the Vulcans going on a scoring run, Dominican fought to stay in the match and were able to put up five points in the latter half of the set to chip away at the gap. Hawaii Hilo carried the final lead to close out the set 25-11. 

The second set began with traded points and five lead changes. The Penguins secured a 13-12 lead with Rivers and Matthews to credit for a combined six kills. The Vulcans took the lead a final time to finish the set 25-13. 

Dominican brought the energy at the start of final set and kept the score within one for the first 13 points of the match. Hawaii Hilo took a final lead to close the set 25-16. 

The Penguins will be back in action Saturday for their home match at 7 p.m. PDT against Hawaii Pacific at Conlan Center.
