TURLOCK, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis wrapped up the NCAA Division II portion of its schedule with a 5-2 victory Wednesday afternoon over Stanislaus State at the Stan State Tennis Courts.
The Warriors (4-8) took an early lead as Annabelle Mulick and Alyssa Tay claimed a 6-0 victory in No. 2 doubles while the other two doubles matches remained close.
Gina Dudley and
Audrey Rafols were able to hold on to a narrow lead for a 6-4 win on the top court to even the match, while
Julia Rydel and
Zoe Coggins finished moments later with a 6-4 victory of their own to give the Penguins (9-6) a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the singles portion, Sylvanna Talamantes once again gave Stanislaus State the first match victory as she took a 6-1, 6-0 victory in No. 4 singles to even the team score at 1-1.
Gigi Alajeely responded with a 6-1, 6-2 victory for Dominican at No. 6 singles to retake the lead.
Julia Rydel claimed a 6-2 victory over Tay in the first set of No. 5 singles, but Tay matched her at every turn in the second as they went to a tiebreaker after a 6-6 tie. Rydel was able to dispatch Tay in the tiebreaker 7-3 to claim the match and put the Penguins a singles match away from clinching the team victory.
Mulick looked to have the upper hand in No. 2 doubles over
Gina Dudley as she claimed the first set 6-2 for the Warriors, but Dudley responded with a 6-3 victory in the second set for the Penguins. Dudley then quickly closed the door as she won 6-0 in the third set, clinching the Dominican victory. Amber Huk gave Stanislaus State another point as she claimed the 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory in No. 1 singles, but Coggins held on for a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory in No. 3 singles for the Penguins.
Dominican will return to home Friday for as it celebrate Senior Day against William Jessup at 2 p.m. PDT at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
