Box Score OAKLAND, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis topped rival Holy Names 6-1 Sunday afternoon at Meyer Tennis Center in the first meeting between the teams since the 2020 season.
"Today was a great way to end our weekend," head coach
Cristina Visico Hassanali said. "We got into some tight deuce game situations in the beginning of singles and doubles, but we were able to play with a little more grit and play to win. We knew if we stayed mentally tough in the big moments we would take care of business. We are very confident in our doubles this season, to be able to go out there and start strong in the beginning really helps gain momentum for the team."
Audrey Rafols and
Gina Dudley got the Penguins (5-4) off to a strong start by taking No. 1 doubles in straight games 6-0 over Ana Rios and Lada Bagaleva of the Hawks (2-4).
Julia Rydel and
Zoe Coggins added a 6-2 victory on the second court as Dominican took the doubles point.
Gigi Alajeely gave the Penguins the first point of the singles portion to keep the ball rolling as she topped Ella Lavender 6-3, 6-1. Rafols was close behind her taking No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1 over Rios to extend the Dominican lead to 3-0 in the match. Rydel claimed the next point 6-3, 6-4 over Lucy Rekasch to clinch the match.
Dominican will have the week off before heading south to take on Stanislaus State on Saturday, March 19 at the Stan State Tennis Center.
