IRVINE, Calif. – Dominican set a new conference record with a 3.474 program GPA to claim its third-straight PacWest Academic Achievement Award and ninth overall.
"This was a fantastic year for PacWest student-athletes in the classroom with the conference recording its best academic year to date," PacWest Commissioner Bob Hogue said. "Congratulations to Dominican University on winning a third-consecutive Academic Achievement award. This builds on a strong legacy of academic achievement for the Penguins over the last decade. It's a tribute to the school's dedication to success both on the field of competition and in the classroom."
The Penguins have maintained above a 3.4 for the past six years to lead the PacWest to its highest conference GPA ever at 3.203, improving last year's overall conference record by 0.031. Dominican joined the conference for the 2009-10 season and has finished second once.
Point Loma and Chaminade also set school records for best GPAs by their respective athletic departments. At Point Loma, student-athletes averaged a 3.424 GPA, which is the fourth highest in PacWest history. Chaminade had the third-best GPA of the year at 3.35. A total of nine of the 12 PacWest schools reported higher GPAs in 2018-19 than the year before.
The PacWest continued its upward trend in the GPAs of student-athletes, eclipsing 3.20 for the first time in conference history. After Dominican, Point Loma and Chaminade setting school records as PacWest members in GPA, Biola finished in fourth place with a GPA of 3.258. Azusa Pacific and Hawai`i Pacific were right behind with GPAs of 3.245 and 3.242, respectively. Fresno Pacific had the biggest improvement in GPA from last year, going from 2.800 to a 3.006 GPA in 2018-19.
