Marina Butler named interim head coach for DUC WLAX

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican University of California Athletics announced that Marina Butler has been promoted to interim head coach for women's lacrosse. Butler, the New York native, has been the assistant coach for the Penguins the last two seasons.

"I am excited for Coach Butler to take over the reins of the women's lacrosse program, she has great attention to detail and is extremely organized," athletics director Amy Henkelman said. "She puts the young women's mental, physical wellbeing, and sense of belonging first over being an athlete. Coach Butler is and will continue to be a wonderful mentor to the young women in the program."

A native of Irondequoit, New York, Butler was a standout athlete at Irondequoit High School, earning Most Valuable Player honors during her senior season before continuing her career at the NCAA Division I level where she was a two-time captain.

Butler joined Dominican's coaching staff in September 2024 as an assistant coach following an accomplished five-year playing career at the University of Detroit Mercy. She worked primarily with the offense the last two seasons with the Penguins overseeing a unit that scored a total of 388 goals. She also helped develop two players who are now playing at the Division I level.

Since arriving in the Bay Area, she has established herself as both a collegiate coach and a leader in youth lacrosse development, bringing a passion for player growth, program building and growing the game.

"I am endlessly grateful for the support from Amy, the entire department, and my family back home, and I couldn't be more excited to lead this program and continue building on the foundation of Dominican Women's Lacrosse," Butler said. "Going into my third year at Dominican, I'm happy and honored that I was chosen to lead this program. Having spent the last two seasons as the assistant, I know how special this group is, and the bond I've built with these players makes this opportunity incredibly meaningful. My goal is to provide the consistent support and structure our student athletes need to reach their full potential both as human beings and lacrosse players. By staying focused on our daily habits and supporting each other on and off the field, I truly believe we can accomplish something special this season."
