MONMOUTH, Ore. – Senior
Buay Deng capped off his career making history for Dominican men's cross country at the NCAA West Region Cross Country Championships at Ash Creek Preserve.
"All our runners did freaking awesome," head coach
Teressa DiPerna said. "We had some of their best times with Buay setting a school record and Jacob [Potere] set a freshman record."
Deng ran hard throughout as he set a personal record through the first 8,000 meters with a 25:58 before sprinting for the finish line with Kurt Hake of Azusa Pacifc. Deng crossed the line in 32:29.0 to finish 114th and shatter the previous Penguin record in a 10k set by
Justin Valdez (33:26.37) in 2013.
Potere was close behind Deng for much of the race hitting the halfway mark in 16:25 on his way to also passing Valdez's record with a time of 33:18.9 in 148th place.
Stefan Mueller finished 173rd overall while dropping two minutes from his last 10k time with a time of 34:17.7 to round out the Dominican team.
