Sarah Chavez and
Louie Etta each produced significant personal records Friday as Dominican cross country continued its early-season progression at the Saint Mary's Invitational at Newhall Park.
Chico State swept the team titles, winning the women's 6K with 39 points ahead of California with 69 and taking the men's 8K with 30 points ahead of host Saint Mary's with 82. Dominican placed 14th in the women's race with 453 points, finishing ahead of Pacific's 467, while the men finished 12th with 392 points to edge Pacific by two points.
Robles led the Dominican women with a career-best 23:38.9 seconds to finish 123rd overall. The junior took more than 30 seconds off the 24:09.8 she ran six days earlier at the Kim Duyst Invitational and moved from fifth to third on Dominican's all-time 6K list. Robles also closed well, moving up four positions from 127th at the second split to 123rd at the finish.
Jessica Carvalho followed in 135th at 24:09.3, giving Dominican two runners inside the top 135. Carvalho's performance came just 7.3 seconds off her 24:02.0 personal record and keeps the freshman among the program's top five all time. Chavez delivered Dominican's second record-book improvement of the women's race, finishing 136th in a personal-best 24:12.1. The senior cut more than 33 seconds from the 24:45.4 she ran at Kim Duyst and climbed from 10th to sixth on Dominican's all-time 6K list.
Madeline Beaton was Dominican's fourth finisher at 27:41.3, followed by
Nora White in 28:16.0 to complete the Penguins' scoring five.
Ashlyn Ennis crossed in 29:34.1,
Abbigael Williams finished in 30:18.6 and
Bella Vasquez added a 30:41.2.
Etta led the Dominican men with his strongest collegiate 8K to date, finishing 102nd overall in 25:29.9. The sophomore took more than a minute off his 26:33.0 personal best from Kim Duyst and climbed from ninth to sixth on Dominican's all-time 8K list.
Diego Montag followed in 117th with a time of 26:00.1, finishing just one-tenth of a second off his program top-10 personal best. Diego Alas was Dominican's third finisher in 28:49.1, with
Ishaan Iyer following in 29:12.7.
Isaac Robinson completed the scoring five in 31:07.6, while Jailen Truitt-Johnson crossed in 31:39.9.
The Dominican men also made a late move in the team standings. The Penguins trailed Pacific by one point at the third split, but reversed the order over the closing portion of the race to finish two points ahead of the Tigers.
Dominican will return to competition Sept. 26 at the Jessup Invitational in Rocklin, California.
