Jeremiah Gray hit a clutch 3-pointer to give Dominican men's basketball a 58-57 victory over Notre Dame de Namur Wednesday night at Walter Gleason Gymnasium.
Gray led the Penguins (5-13, 4-7 PacWest) with 16 points and five rebounds. Freshman
Christian Futch returned from injury to add 11 points, four rebounds and two blocks, while junior
Cedric Thomas grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. RJ Louis led three Argonauts (4-12, 3-8 PacWest) in double figures with 19 points.
Dominican shot 44.7 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc, while holding Notre Dame de Namur to 40.7 percent from the field and 25 percent from 3-point range.
Trailing by two late, Gray swooped down the lane for a layup to tie the game at 53 with two minutes remaining and the teams traded buckets for the next minute. Gray continued to provide clutch play for the Penguins and gave them a 58-57 lead with a 3-pointer with 37 seconds remaining. Louis missed a jumper with 10 seconds remaining, but Anthony Suber grabbed an offensive rebound to give the Argonauts one more chance. Louis then turned the ball over with an offensive foul and Dominican left victorious.
The game began as the teams traded baskets until freshman
Jordan Williams led an early 9-0 run for the Penguins with seven consecutive points to give them the 15-9 lead with 13:51 remaining in the half. Chris Williams II knocked down a 3-pointer to stretch the lead to eight a few minutes later, but the Argonauts began to chip away from there.
An 8-0 run over the next five minutes tied the game at 22 RJ Louis gave NDNU the 27-25 lead with a shot from behind the arc with three minutes until the break. The teams continued to trade points for the remainder of the half and the Argonauts took a 33-29 lead into the break.
Gray bookended a
Cedric Thomas layup with two 3-pointers to retake a 37-35 lead for Dominican in the first two minutes of the second half. Good ball movement on the offensive end helped the Penguins stage a 7-0 run to take a 46-40 lead, but the Argonauts answered with an 11-3 burst to make it 51-50 in their favor with seven minutes remaining. The teams combined for four points over the next four minutes as the game became a defensive struggle before the final two minutes.
