Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Freshman Mia Venne helped manufacture two goals in her first home game for Dominican Women's soccer to lead the Penguins to a 2-0 victory Tuesday over Cal State East Bay at Kennelly Field.
 
Venne finished with a goal and an assist for Dominican (1-1). Junior Tianna Brown was on the receiving end of Venne's assist for the first goal of the game, while Taylor Evinger set up Venne for the second goal. Gabriella Tassano shutout the Pioneers (1-2) with three saves on the day.
 
Nae'lani O'Neal created opportunities for Cal State East Bay on the other side with three shots and two on frame.
 
The Penguins had 11 shots with six on goal, while holding the Pioneers to only three shots on frame.
 
In the 82nd minute, Venne took a ball down the left wing and crossed a ball back into the middle of the box where Brown was waiting to put it away with a shot into the upper-right 90 of the goal. Two minutes later, Evinger found Venne alone again on the left side of the box and Venne shot was too strong for Gonzalez to handle as it bounced off her hands and into the net.
 
The first half was a defensive battle between the two teams. Miranda Gonzalez had the first goal scoring opportunity of the game in the 36th minute for Cal State East Bay, but her shot from in front of the goal went high. Junior Rachel Stowell then had two opportunities for Dominican near the end of the half finding space on the left side of the box, but both her shots went wide of the near post.
 
The Penguins took the momentum into the second half, controlling the possession with good ball movement. Junior Lily Dubuc nearly broke open the scoring in the 54th when her shot snuck between keeper Ina Gonzalez's hands, but Nicole Lutz cleared the ball before it crossed the goal line.
 
Dominican will be on the road Saturday to take on Chico State at 4 p.m. PST at University Soccer Stadium. Live stats will be available online.
