HONOLULU – Dominican women's soccer controlled much of the second half and finished with a 13-7 advantage in shots, but a first-half Chaminade goal stood up as the Silverswords earned a 1-0 PacWest victory Wednesday morning at Saint Louis Field.
Dominican fell to 6-8-1 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while Chaminade improved to 2-11-1 and 2-5 in the PacWest. The Penguins put four shots on goal and held Chaminade without a shot over the final 45 minutes after the Silverswords generated all seven of their attempts in the opening half.
Janae Schwan produced Dominican's first look in the 10th minute, sending an attempt over the top of the goal.
Ysabella Belandres followed with the Penguins' first shot on frame in the 20th minute, but Sydney Bakritzes made the save.
Guilianna McCarty and
Carson Warfield added attempts as Dominican continued to probe for an opening goal. Chaminade broke through in the 38th minute after a loose ball developed between the Dominican defense and goalkeeper
Michelle Salas Viniegra resulted in a collision, allowing it to spill free in front of goal. Olivia Leonard was there to collect the loose ball and finish into the empty net for the 1-0 lead at 37:23.
The Penguins came out aggressively after halftime and forced Bakritzes into action in the 50th minute. Schwan struck an attempt that dipped toward goal and forced the Chaminade goalkeeper to reach up and tip the ball over the crossbar, giving Dominican a corner. Dominican continued to spend much of the half in the attacking end.
Mealani Salema sent an effort wide in the 66th minute before Schwan had another look from a set piece in the 74th that carried high. Warfield put an attempt on frame in the 77th minute, and
Lyric Gomez-Muniz followed two minutes later with another shot that required a save from Bakritzes.
Felicity Muro and
Gia Aldama produced two more late attempts as the Penguins continued searching for an equalizer, but Chaminade held on despite not recording a shot in the second half.
