Schwan scores senior day hat trick to powers Penguins

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Janae Schwan recorded a hat trick as Dominican women's soccer celebrated Senior Day with a 5-0 victory over Jessup on Saturday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

The Penguins (8-9-1, 3-6 PacWest) controlled the attack with a 21-8 advantage in shots and put 11 attempts on goal, while the Warriors (1-12-3, 1-7-1 PacWest) managed three shots on frame. Schwan scored three times on eight shots, Carson Warfield added a goal and an assist and Gia Aldama scored once as five different Penguins recorded assists. Dominican also combined for its seventh shutout of the season.

Dominican threatened from close range in the fifth minute when Gisela Ponce found herself point blank with Tyler Boren, but the Jessup goalkeeper correctly anticipated the direction of the shot and made the save. Warfield had her chance to open the scoring in the 7th minute when she drove an attempt toward the far post, but Boren got a fingertip to the ball to keep the match scoreless. The Penguins broke through five minutes later when Bailey Nadell dribbled centrally before slipping a pass to Schwan at the upper-right corner of the penalty area. Schwan kept a defender sealed on her hip as she spun toward goal and buried her shot inside the far post for a 1-0 advantage.

Jessup created one of its best first-half chances following a corner in the 21st minute as Kambria Steele connected with a right-footed shot near the penalty spot, but Jessica Ortega cleared the attempt off the line for a team save to preserve the lead. Dominican just before the half after Kiana Ayllon worked the ball to Warfield near the top of the penalty area in the 42nd minute. Warfield struck from distance and squeezed the shot under Boren and inside the left post to send the Penguins into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.

Schwan struck again at in the 56th minute after Warfield sent a dangerous ball into the box. A Jessup defender headed it away, but the clearance fell to Schwan, who flicked the ball out of the air and into the back of the net for her second goal of the afternoon and a 3-0 lead. The Penguins extended the advantage in the 74th minute when Lyric Gomez-Muniz intercepted a pass in midfield and quickly played ahead to Warfield along the left sideline. Warfield crossed into the penalty area, where Aldama redirected the ball toward the far side and off the right post for a 4-0 lead.

Schwan completed the hat trick at 86:22 in an unusual scoring combination. Michelle Salas Viniegra, who had started the match in goal before later returning as a field player, played a ball forward to Schwan. The senior took a touch beyond the goalkeeper and, with the net open, finished from a shallow angle off the left post and in for the final 5-0 margin.

Schwan finished her final regular-season home match with three goals and five shots on frame, giving her eight goals on the season. Warfield contributed three points with her goal and assist, while Aldama scored her third goal of the year. Salas Viniegra and Rylee Buesing split the match in goal, with Buesing making two saves in the second half to complete the combined shutout.
