Penguins fall to Warriors

Box Score TURLOCK, Calif. -- Dominican women's soccer opened its season Saturday with a 3-0 loss against Stanislaus State.

Initially supposed to be Dominican's home opener, but the game was moved to Turlock under the lights due to the heat in San Rafael. The Penguins (0-1) shot three times in the game with senior Mariah Meza getting the lone attempt on goal. Jade Poon and Rayana Plancarte led the Warriors (2-0) with two shots apiece.

The first half of the match was a defensive battle with a combined four shots and one on goal between the two team. The Penguins lone scoring opportunity came in the 21st minute but junior Bailey Kiser's shot went wide.

Stanislaus State broke through the defensive struggle with three goals in the second half. Mayah Chambers scored her first goal of the season on a header in the box assisted off Sadie Montague's cross from the left wing. Seconds later, Bella Rivera scored her first goal of the season on a long shot assisted by Plancarte. In the 69th minute, Hannah Rogers crossed the ball into the box and Julia Cummings touched it to Jenna Zuniga for the goal.

Meza found some space in the defense in the 70th minute, but her shot was corralled by Haley Crook.

The Penguins will host Cal State East Bay at Kennely Field Tuesday at 4 p.m. PST.
