Torres guides Penguins past Slugs

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- Junior Lily Dubuc and senior Ivy Torres scored to give Dominican women's soccer a 2-0 victory Sunday over UC Santa Cruz at Kennelly Field.

The Penguins (2-2-1) finished the game with 17 shots and held the Banana Slugs (1-7) to three shots. Five of those 17 shots were on goal for the Penguins, while Alyssa Ramos saved both UC Santa Cruz attempts on her goal. Ramos moved to 1-1-1 on the season and recorded her second consecutive shutout.

The Penguins ramped up the pressure in the second half and Dubuc found the breakthrough goal in the 69th minute when Torres found her in the box on a free kick and Dubuc headed it past the keeper. In the 85th minute, Torres took the ball across the middle and sent a rocket from 25 yards out that went above the hands of the keeper to double the lead.

UC Santa Cruz had all three of their shots in the first half, but Ramos was ready and kept a clean net. The Penguins pressed early in the first half as well and Keira Dagy and Mariah Meza each narrowly missed goals in the first five minutes of the match.

Dominican will kick off Pacific West Conference play in Fresno, California, Thursday against Fresno Pacific at 5 p.m. PST. Live stats will be available online.
